Richard Perry Irish blue limestone (Kilkenny) 14.5 x 18.5 x 17.5cm
"From some angles, this sculpture reminds me of a capsized boat. Less figurative is the idea of flotsam – objects found drifting in the sea – which can take any shape."
BEHIND THE ARTWORK
Carved from Irish blue limestone, Carrara marble and bronze, Richard Perry's series for Smithson Gallery is exquisitely tactile and each sculpture can be picked up and positioned accordingly.
Richard's work is deeply informed by his surroundings. Speaking in our exclusive artist interview, he elaborates:
"I find both the natural and the manmade world invigorating. I live on the top floor of an old watermill with a fantastic and ever-transforming view. I love juxtapositions in landscapes, contrast-filled areas like edge-lands, and whilst I am keenly interested in the built environment and architecture, I also love raw, unspoiled nature. I particularly like cliff faces that you can see patterns in, and the structure and geometry in rock forms."
