BEHIND THE ARTWORK
“The studies are for larger paintings to come, my beautiful friend Deandra was my art model. I am thinking of Queen Nanny of the Maroons, who was never a slave. She trained and led her army—made up of Africans and runaway slaves to defeat the British army preventing them from ever gaining control of the territory of the Maroons, in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica.”
