BEHIND THE ARTWORK
"To celebrate this year's theme of Flora and Fauna, I have looked to nature for this collection of works, with three series of unique screenprints, Stripe, Crown and Rose plus a new collection of collages, Peaches. Taking inspiration from Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours the two smaller series of unique works on paper are based on two British birds, the male Bullfinch and the Kingfisher.
First published in 1814, Werner's Nomenclature of Colours is a taxonomic guide to colour which has been used by naturalists for over two centuries. In the late 1790's Abraham Gottlob Werner devised his own standardised colour scheme, which allowed the writer to describe even the subtlest of chromatic differences with consistent terminology. Scottish flower painter Patrick Syme later enhanced and extended Werner's work to include all of the most common colours or tints that appear in nature, with each colour swatch accompanied by examples from the Animal, Vegetable and Mineral Kingdoms."
