"I’ve been using iconic, global motifs and patterns in my work for the past fifteen years. I am really interested in Islamic patterns, I also love traditional African art and the patterns of Mud Cloth and textiles, as well as Asian patterns and symbols. I’m obsessed with the circle, and the patterns created with this “simple” shape. I wanted to understand the way to create these more intricate patterns myself. I found some books on the subject and have been practicing creating my own patterns, based on the classics, with a new found understanding of the geometry behind the work.
I like to mix up imagery and pattern to give the pieces some depth, multi-dimensional interest and a more contemporary twist. This creates movement, with some areas more “hidden” and some emerging gradually within the overall design."
